The Lewis test is for secretor/non-secretor status. Knowing your secretor status means you would know whether you secrete your ABO blood group antigens into your saliva and other body secretions (secretor) or not (non-secretor)
The results of the Lewis test can be either:
- Lea+ Leb- (non-secretor),
- Lea- Leb+ (secretor), or
- Lea- Leb- (Lewis negative)
About 5% of people are Lewis negative, these people can't find their secretor status with the Lewis test, they should use a DNA test, the gene is FUT2.
Being Lewis negative has its own immunological consequences and health risks, and can be a transitory state as a consequence of certain diseases or extreme stress in some people. The relevant gene is FUT3.
Secretor status is used for following the blood group diet at an advanced level, as in the book Live Right 4 Your Type, or to calculate your GenoType in The GenoType Diet: Change Your Genetic Destiny.
